Hi and welcome to today's issue of Keeping in Touch. A big, warm 'hello' to all our new subscribers.

Happy April Fool's Day! And a really big 'thank you' to those who sent me birthday wishes. That was wonderful. I had so much fun and I look at reaching 50 as an accomplishment. The number itself may be a bit shocking at first, but I don't feel any different than I did a few days before March 24th.

Our Feature today is by Herman Drost. In How to Increase Link Popularity and Improve Search Engine Ranking, Herman emphasizes the importance of quality linking strategies. At this point in time, linking is important to your ranking in search engines -- in particular, Google.

It pays to be a little bit picky about who you link to and please, stay away from link farms. A link farm is where you link to every possible request that comes your way. These links are usually not organized in any fashion -- they just 'fill' a page. Search engines frown on this type of linking for good reason. If you don't check first, you may find a link for a church beside a link to a porn site. Know who you are linking with.

Most of us operating an online business simply assume that tomorrow will be business as usual. We can only hope that is the case. Are you prepared for your business to go on without you there? How to Increase Link Popularity and Improve Search Engine Ranking

If you want to improve search engine ranking of your web site, you need to find a large number of high quality links from other web sites. These are called inbound links. Gaining links from high ranking sites that point to yours will increase your link popularity in the search engines.

The most popular search engine Google, places great significance on the link popularity of your web site. In fact, you can even get listed in Google without submitting your site to them, by getting other sites to link to yours. Finding many high ranking sites that link to yours, will improve the search engine ranking of your own web site.

Four effective ways to increase link popularity

1. Get your site listed in the search engine directories - first submit your site to the human edited directories of ODP (Open Directory Project - dmoz.org) and Yahoo (yahoo.com). Getting listed in these directories will give your site a boost in link popularity and improve search engine ranking in other search engines.

However, this may take some time.

You can get listed much faster by getting links from niche specific directories. Find these directories by doing a search on the major search engines with the primary keywords of your web site.

2. Provide high quality content - people will naturally link to your site if you have what they want (i.e. articles, software, etc). This will save you a lot of time searching for quality links yourself.

Optimizing your content with well placed keywords, will improve your search engine ranking dramatically. Search engines love focused content.

Don't you love it when you immediately find what you are searching for?

One way of achieving this is by writing and publishing articles. You can include a link at the end of your article. When your article gets published, you will automatically have gained a link to your site.

3. Requesting links from other sites - request links from sites that ideally have a high search engine ranking. Start by including a link from your site to theirs. Include a paragraph describing what your link is about. This helps achieve a greater number of clickthroughs to your site.

Request that they do the same when linking to your web site. If you provide this for them (with some of your primary keywords included of course), and provide quality information, you will have a greater chance of gaining a high quality link.

4. Write a testimonial - write a favorable review of someone's product or web site. Include the benefits you received through visiting their site. If that person wishes to use your testimony on their site, make sure they include a link back to your web site.

These are some of the best strategies you should implement to increase link popularity of your web site. It will improve search engine ranking and also boost your web site traffic.

One Man, One Woman!

Most of us online networkers run our business on a one-man or one-woman basis but it's a moot point how good that is for us and our business.

Doing it alone you can set goals for everything and change them the next day. You could forget to plan for success and there won't be hell to pay. We are rather forgiving of our own mistakes.

Working with a partner is a new world indeed! But does your online business need you to take in a partner?

Not always! If your online biz has reached the stage where a forced absence can have seriously damaging effects on future earnings then I believe it's time to consider a valid and compatible partner.

Other wise it might be sufficient to consider what steps you can put in place today if for some un- avoidable reason you are unable to attend your online ventures for a few days.

There are many reasons why this might become necessary; one of which is the most compelling - ill-health or worse...Hospitalization.

Most circumstances leave you options with which you can work your biz at some functional level but ill-health very often brings everything to a complete standstill.

If you don't have a partner, spouse, or friend to keep things going it might do to put in some contingency planning today.

Analyse your online ventures...
Identify those that need regular inputs...
Automate where ever possible... (monthly payments etc)
Use auto-responders...

After doing this if you find there are aspects of your online business that still need regular personal intervention then you need a 'partner'

Is there someone who could take care of things while you are temporarily out of circulation? someone who knows the 'login id' and 'passwords'? someone you can trust?

someone who won't look funnily at you when they know what you have been doing online for so long?

If you have - Great! If you have and they 'understand' - count your blessings!

If you don't have a 'partner'...? maybe you could set up a few processes:

Like you could switch your email client to 'vacation mode' with a pre-prepared reply to keep prospects and others informed of your temporary unavailability.

Program owners where dues are pending will surely attempt to contact you before disabling your accounts, an auto-response will inform them of the situation, bring some leeway and help you get back to where you were when matters improve.

maybe you could keep your 'mail inboxes' empty...

maybe go in for paid isp's that do not filter your mail and give a minimum storage space of atleast 15mb. With a big inbox there will be plenty to attend to when you get back to business but once done you will be updated with what has been happening ...when you were gone! And that's important!

There are a hundred other things you could do, this is just a hint to get you thinking along these lines. See what you could work out for your particular programs and circumstances.
