The significant challenges that we face today cannot be resolved by the same level of thinking that created them.

KIT # 88: Stop Worrying, Start Choosing
Issue:   #88    Date: March 10th, 2003

Publisher's Corner

Hi and welcome to today's issue of Keeping in Touch. A big, warm 'hello' to all our new subscribers.

Are you always prepared for the challenges life brings your way? I try to be prepared but this last month has proved the exception.

A week ago Thursday, a very special aunt of mine died suddenly. A couple of weeks before that my cousin witnessed the birth of her first grandchild only to see him pass away six days later. I don't think we can ever be prepared for this kind of loss.

Then last Monday, my husband and I woke up to a freezing house. We reset the furance and prepared to leave town to attend my aunt's memorial service. We got back home around nine or ten that night -- you guessed, no heat. Jimm worked on that furnace until about 4:00 a.m. only to discover it couldn't be fixed.

On Tuesday we called a furnace repair office in Winnipeg and were told the parts had to be flown in and they likely couldn't repair it until this past Friday.

Between the help of a new friend here in Elie we were able to pick up all the firewood we needed from their supply. So by using the fireplace, the oven and a small ceramic heater, we were able to at least create the illusion of warmth. None of the pipes froze in these horrid temperatures -41°C. Now that is one adventure that both James and I have had enough of. I'm happy to report we now have heat in this house. Yeah!

Sales Letter Commands - How To Use Them For Profit!
By Grady Smith

Face it; most that write sales letters don't want to sound too "pushy". And I agree with you. You don't want to sound like a used car salesman selling hype and filler. But you do need to take a more active voice in your sales letters and actually give direction in the form of a command to close more sales.

A few years ago when I started writing sales letters for my own products I was plagued by the fear of sounding to forceful to readers of my letters. Even though I knew that you needed to tell prospects what you want them to do, I had a problem with it.

The result of my early sales letters?

Well, poor response. Out of a mailing to thousands I got only a small handful of responses.

I still remember the line I used in this sales letter to close the sale, and it comes back and haunts me whenever I see similar lines on sales letters written by those, that like me are afraid of giving a command.

The closing line was, "If you'd like to do this then you can mail me a response and I'll send you more details."

Yikes!

Now, I'm not a pushy person. I'm actually quite reserved and it took a lot out of me writing my first sales letter. But after seeing my absolutely horrible response after shedding some blood and tears, I decided it was time to take the bull by the horns and place some commands into my sales letters.

What do I mean by sales letter commands? I'm referring to telling (not asking) the prospect to take action. Instead of a question, I'm actually saying, "do this." And it works.

To explain commands and show you the difference between asking and commanding, let me give you a few examples:

I recently saw this line in a sales letter guarantee: "If you order your satisfaction is guaranteed."

But to change that over to a strong command, the writer could have said, "Order now and your satisfaction is guaranteed."

Really, it's just a small transition. But by simply changing the focus and stating it as a command the guarantee becomes stronger.

Another example.

"If you order right now, you'll also get the free bonuses."

Here's that same line strengthened with a command. "Order right now by clicking the link below and you'll get your free bonus."

See how that works?

Instead of asking them to order, I'm telling them and I'm giving them directions.

But can this really increase conversion for you? You bet! Just look at any successful infomercial and you'll see all kinds of commands like "order now" and "pick up the phone".

Try this right now with your existing sales letter. Get in there and change any of your passive questions into commands. The results will amaze!

Are You Ready to Pay to Send eMail?

If you haven't been following the latest news about sender- warranted email, you better listen up now or it may be too late.

You may not even have an online business yet and feel that this won't affect you. I hate to say it, but you would be wrong. You should be aware of the changes that are currently being implemented and the way these changes could affect your ability to freely send email.

I've told you about Habeas, Inc. and included the links from jl scott's site. She has done a fabulous job of explaining what Habeas is and how it will affect small business owners. I know you are busy but this is important to the future of the Internet. You'll find all the details here:

http://www.i-Cop.org/habeas/

You can also take a stand against this proposal by signing the International Petition here:

http://i-Cop.org/habeas/petition.htm

After reading and researching the details about Habeas, we knew it would only be a matter of time before others started to jump on the bandwagon. There's a new company trying to implement the same type of sender-warranted email although cost details are sketchy in my view.

http://www.coravue.com/optin

You already pay for your ISP service, so why should you have to pay on top of that to send an email to family or friends? Be sure to read jl scott's reports. She has gathered the information for you and everything is in one place.

Stop Worrying, Start Choosing
By Kathy Gates, Professional Life Coach

Do you take the "ignorance is bliss" strategy in your life?

Many people Sleep-Walk through life, worrying about what might happen, then "letting things happen", instead of actively choosing what they want in their life lives.

The first step to change - any change- must begin with becoming aware of what you are doing.

How? Stop worrying, start choosing.

Conscious Choice/Conscious Living means knowing what you are doing, and making a choice to do that, instead of worrying about, or just letting it happen. Did you just "End Up" in a job you don't like? Did you "End Up" living a hectic, frustrating, tiring lifestyle? Did you "End Up" with too many bills to pay?

Choices come in a lot of colors and shapes in your life. You are making choices each moment of each day. Some people find it difficult to believe that they have free will and are actually designing their lives each and every minute. A famous quote says it well, "The way we live our days is the way we live our lives."

So while on the surface the idea that you are "choosing" to live a certain way (possibly miserably) seems unfair, it is also quite empowering that YOU CAN CHANGE IT!

Think for a moment about just the last 24 hours. You are reading this article as a direct result of your choice to open the email. You are sitting at a computer as a direct result of choosing to check your mail instead of watch TV or eat or sleep or read or go out. You are wearing clothes that you chose to put on. You get the idea.

You may not realize it - or want to admit it - but not only have you made the choices as I just mentioned, but your life AS IT IS TODAY is a direct result of choices you have made, or allowed others to make for you. I'm talking not only about those choices made 10 years ago, but also the choices made 10 minutes ago. You are living somewhere, doing something, and being with someone through choice.

Was it a Conscious Choice?

One of the first arguments I hear when I mention Conscious Choice is "But I didn't choose to have this disease", or "I certainly don't choose to be unhappy". And one of the hardest things to accept is that life isn't always fair. Each one of us was born into a set of circumstances. No one chooses their parents, or what part of the world they will be born into, or even what the economy will be.

Those are all things you cannot control. If you focus on those things, and blame them for your unhappiness, you will forever be stuck. You are choosing each and every minute how you will react to those circumstances. The circumstances cannot dictate your response.

The real problem in your life is not what mistakes you made in the past, or what things happened to you that were out of your control, but what you are choosing - or not choosing -- to do NOW.

Instead of being paralyzed by what has happened in the past or what you might predict will happen in the future, sticking to what you can do now, helps you to understand that you are free to lead an effective life now. You are free to forget the past and blaming others -

And instead spend that time making the choices that are right for you now. .

What will you choose today?
