| KIT # 81: Why Almost Everything We Have Been Taught About Selling is Wrong - Dead Wrong |
| Issue: #81 Date: January 21st, 2003 Publisher's Corner Hi and welcome to today's issue of Keeping in Touch. A big, warm 'hello' to all our new subscribers. It takes time to get used to something new, doesn't it? The new version of AutoResponse Plus works a bit differently and when I tried sending out KIT Klassifieds, I scheduled it to go out on Saturday. Unfortunately, I missed the filter setting and the message kept going to only one subscriber - a new one at that. I do apologize. I've decided to use the double opt-in feature offered by the software. This is protection for you as well as me. I've kept the messages returned by subscribers who have entered phony names or used an autoresponder and they will be deleted from the list. Anyone who bounces three times will be removed from the list. It's a tough call when you consider how hard you work to build a good subscriber base. It's even more difficult due to your ISP placing those silly filters on your mail. The cowards who send mail this way just keep changing their email address so you can't effectively filter using addresses. Anyway, I love AutoResponse Plus v3 and the features it offers. It offers so many useful features and it'll be fun to put it all into practice. I'll give you my link if you are looking for an autoresponder that you don't need to pay monthly fees for: http://home4success.com/go/to.cgi?l=ARPWhy Almost Everything We've Been Taught About Selling is Wrong ... DEAD WRONG! is today's Feature Article. Len Foley tells us 'Every career is a sales career.' Think about it and you will understand this is a true statement. Even in day to day life, you'll find yourself telling a friend about a movie you saw or a coffee shop with delicious treats. The bottom line is that you are 'selling'. Selena Richardson brings our Special Feature, Are You Willing to Risk It? Do you have dreams or do you have goals? Some of us have both dreams and goals. The missing step is implementing them. You've heard that definition of insanity ... doing the same thing over and over and over again, expecting different results. Success doesn't happen that way. Be sure to check out the Ad Swaps and Have You Read sections - you never know what will be offered. Have a great day and keep on smiling. Lois M. Jeary Feature Article Why Almost Everything We've Been Taught About Selling is Wrong...DEAD WRONG! By: Len Foley There are a lot of people preparing for elaborate careers who don't know that EVERY career is a SALES career. Let me repeat that: Every career is a sales career. It's true: We all sell to all people all the time. There's no way around it. In fact: Selling isn't something we should reserve for a particular career, selling needs to become a way of life. But that's not the way most people think about sales; most people think "selling" is one of the lowest forms of human behavior. They regard salespeople just above tax collectors and politicians. Could you imagine a mother saying to her child: "Bobby, you'll make Mamma proud someday when you become... a salesman!" It almost sounds like a joke. No mother wants her child to become a salesman. But here's a little secret: Nothing happens until a sale is made. Nothing happens between you and your customers... Between you and your business associates... Friends... or loved ones. Of course, most sales trainers won't tell you anything like that. They'll try and confuse you and say selling only happens at your job. But that's like saying eating only happens at a restaurant. The world's most accomplished sales pros are selling all the time. They're selling at work... at home... at the beach... and anywhere else they interact with other human beings. Don't believe me? Look at anyone from history. Winston Churchill: he never gave speeches, he delivered sophisticated sales presentations. Albert Einstein? He SOLD physics to an otherwise bewildered world. Orson Wells and Alfred Hitchcock? Sure, they were brilliant filmmakers, but their real genius lay in an ability to sell their ideas to the general public. See, the world's best salespeople don't work in retail outlets or on used car lots; the world's best salespeople are the people most admired by everyone you know... They make the most money... They attract the most opportunities... And effortlessly rise to the top of every profession... But I promise you this: you'll never catch them in the "act" of selling! It's true. The best salespeople are so good that they don't seem to be selling anything at all; they don't look like they're doing anything the traditional sales training experts teach. And what exactly do traditional sales training experts teach? They teach "how to sell" instead of "why people buy." In fact, if you remember anything from this article, remember this: People LOVE to buy but HATE to be sold. It's true. I first learned this from legendary marketing guru Freeman Gosden. He said: "If I can tell you one thing: Remember that it's not what and how you SELL something that's important, it's what and how your customer wishes to BUY that's important." Unfortunately, not many sales experts listen to people like Freeman Gosden. Most sales experts are so busy teaching what they know, that they never bother TESTING what they teach. Check it out for yourself: Get out some sales books from your library. Read what their authors have to say and then look at the people at the top of their professions. Could you imagine Oprah Winfrey using the "Porcupine Close" or Colin Powel using "Leading Questions" on national TV? Of course not. The world's most powerful salespeople never do anything traditional sales trainers teach. They wouldn't be caught dead selling the "traditional" way. is more important than any other thing. The trouble with people is not that they don't know but that
they know so much that ain't so. Special Feature Are You Willing To Risk It? By Selena Richardson - http://www.creationjourneys.com (c) Copyright 2003 What would your life be like if you kept doing everything the same way? If you stood still for the next 10 or 20 years and didn't make progress with anything? If you stayed stuck in the same situations that you're in now? If you stayed at the same job, with the same pay, lived at the same apartment? What if nothing changed but the years? You still would have goals and dreams but what if you never took action on any of them? How long are you going to go through the same story lines like the soap operas do? Just changing the names and faces as time rolls on. Is it going to take one, two or even ten years for you to figure it out? What is it going to take for you to realize that you are just replaying the same events over and over again? You say you want to make a change in your life but you are afraid to take that first step. If you don't move you won't get anywhere. You'll be stuck in the same situations and will repeat them over and over again. You can't let your fear keep you frozen. If you do you'll only have a life full of regrets and what ifs. Are you willing to forget your dreams and repeat the same scenarios for the rest of your life? Only to say that you lived a safe life. And what's the point of life if you don't take risks every now and then? Is it worth it for you to go after your dreams? What's the worst that can happen? Sure there's that possibility of failure. But you can't succeed at anything in life if you don't at least give it a try. Fear of failure can be paralyzing. You need to break yourself free from the grip of fear. The only thing worse than failure is not trying at all. You know you have the potential within you so take the chance of a lifetime and go for it. Reach for your dreams. You just might go further than you expected. Failure is not a bad word, it's just another experience that you have the opportunity to learn and grow from. So don't be afraid of it. Besides if you do fail you might find a way to reach you dreams that you wouldn't have thought of before. So if you don't try and give yourself a chance to succeed or fail you're holding out on many of life's possibilities. Stay focused on your dream and make it happen. Isn't it worth it? ~~~~~Selena Richardson, webmaster of http://www.creationjourneys.com is a believer that you can create your journey in life.
