Issue #31: Why Do I Keep On Keeping On?

Hi <FIRST_NAME>,

Here's What We Have For YOU Today:

~ Publisher's Corner
~ Notes and Quotes
~ Feature Articles
~ Ezine ADventure
~ Helpful Hints
~ Readers' Comments/Suggestions
~ Ad Swaps

~~~Publisher's Corner~~~
How's everyone's week going so far? Are you finally back
on track after the holidays? I think I am.
Today we have two subscriber articles for your viewing
pleasure. Our first Feature comes from Mike Gill who is
retired and is using the Internet to build his retirement
income from scratch.
Our second Feature, Passion Or Weakness?, comes to us from
Kathy Stone. This is her first article and she's very
excited to see it published. We look forward to seeing
more, Kathy.
When you are submitting articles for publication or ads for
inclusion in e-zines, there are a few 'standard' rules that
will help. It's just basic courtesy and ultimately saves
everyone time.
Never run your ad or article more than 60 characters per
line. This is a big help in keeping everything uniform
and saves time. If you don't follow the rules, you will
probably start receiving your ads back to be reformatted.
Some allow 65 characters, however, that's usually the
absolute maximum when you are talking e-zines.
The double quote can cause some problems depending on the
program used to send the ezine out. Most of you have
undoubtedly noticed that if you send in your ads with them,
I usually change them to single quotes. I've seen others
use the '*' symbol to emphasize a point or a quote.
One other thing is the 'mailto:' -- if you want your e-mail
address to be clickable, just put mailto:joe@domain.com and
your readers can just click on it. If you want to specify
a certain Subject line, you just have to do this:
mailto:joe@domain.com?Subject=Info
Now you not only have a clickable e-mail link that opens
their e-mail program but the Subject line is filled in
automatically. If you have more than one word in the
Subject line, do this:
mailto:joe@domain.com?Subject=InfoMarketing
or
mailto:joe@domain.com?Subject=Info_Marketing
Just make sure there isn't a blank space between the words.
In the second instance, there is an '_' between Info and
Marketing. As soon as you leave that space, the link is
discontinued.
mailto:joe@domain.com?Subject=Info Marketing
Hope that helps you out a bit.
For those of you who do publish your own ezine, you know
the trials and tribulations that go hand in hand with it.
Publishing an ezine, providing articles, resources, tips
or suggestions each week is very demanding on time. But
you know -- I love it! And it's because I have some of the
best subscribers on the Internet.
I would like to share a message I recently received, here.
This did more than make my day! This tribute shows me why
I keep doing what I am. You're the best!
Hi Lois, I just have to make a comment, maybe even two.
Firstly, I want to compliment you on an oustanding
newsletter. I have read hundreds of them in the past two
years, and KIT is the leader of them all. I love to read
your Publishers Corner. It always has something of value.
Secondly, I want to highly commend you for your tenacity.
Knowing that you have fought serious health problems over
the past few years and especially last year, it simply
amazes me that you keep on keeping on. And your attitude
about life in general is amazing.
Let me put it to you this way, and to your readers-My mother
fought a losing battle with MS years ago. But while she was
alive, all of her friends who used to come to our home and
visit her would say 'You know, I came over to cheer up your
mom, but she cheered me up before I got a chance!' You cheer
me up everytime I read your newsletter and you help me keep
the faith!! You are the greatest and so is KIT.
Best Personal Regards,
Thank you so much Gary and Jaye.
I certainly couldn't top that one so let's get on to the
remainder of today's issue -- enjoy! Have a great day and
keep on smiling!
Is it time for Linux on the desktop? Windows remains poised
to sweep competitors off the desktop, but is this the year
that the open source OS snags a share of the market?
http://techupdate.zdnet.com/techupdate/stories/main/0,14179,2835453,00.html
There are going to be some big changes over the next year.
Linux has come a long ways in a short time and Microsoft
will have to watch out. Companies are pretty fed up with
all the licencing nightmares for the new Windows XP
packages. And that's just to maintain the software programs
they had in place and paid for previously.
We'll be featuring articles from time to time about XP in
upcoming issues.
~~~Feature Articles~~~

Is the Standard of Writing Ad Copy getting worse?
by Mike Gill

Yes, I really believe it is.

I am receiving so many emails these days that are full of
spelling mistakes, idiotic claims, hype and today even one
that had a flashing button inviting me to click here and
this was sitting in the run on of the line message. It was
very disturbing on the eyes and you can guess how quickly
that got dumped.

If you want to send out an email that will attract a
reader's attention, remembering that you only have a few
seconds before the dump button is pushed, then be creative
but not stupid in your headline (subject). That is the
part that will be visible to the receiver of the email. If
your headline looks trash, stupid or is insulting then guess
what will happen. Yes, you are right, it will get dumped and
the message has no chance at all of success. So make use of
that headline and write something that is designed to make
the recipient curious to open the message and read it, even
if only partially.

Another mistake often made is that the length of the
headline is so long that it does not fit the normal space in
the message list. It is always better to have a snappy
headline that fits the space and have it read completely
without any need to do anything extra. This will also show
professionalism.

Then the body of the message should not be too long. The
most successful message is often a very short one. It should
contain sufficient information to make the reader click on a
link and then receive the full story from a website that is
designed to sell the product.

Ad copy writing is an art that can and must be learned. If
you are to succeed you must learn from others and the best
way is to get hold of some e-books on the subject. There are
many on the net. If you'd like to know of one I recommend,
email me at mailto:editor@buildretirementincome.com

Another point that should be mentioned here is that some
'clever' advertisers think that by including ALL their
programs into one email it is going to make the reader sit
up and take notice. Well let me assure you that the exact
opposite effect will be the case, if my own reaction is
anything to go by. You read the headline and the first item,
then see all the remainder. Next step - the Dump button.
Information Overload=Dump (the course of least trouble)

For those who work this way, just stop and think. Promote
one program in each email (particularly those that are sent
via Safe Lists) and you will see a much better response.
Don't be greedy. Work one program at a time.

Please make sure that you proof read your ad before sending
it out. Spelling mistakes and words wrongly used only tend
to show the reader that you are an amateur. DO NOT rely on a
spell checker to do all the work, sure it's fine to use one
but if you have used 'there' instead of 'their' the spell
checker will not pick up that mistake. A careful read of a
hard copy is best and then mark on the copy anything that
needs changing. Believe me, I know, after more than 30 years
in the Printing and Typesetting Industries, you must not
forget to do this part thoroughly.

If your email is going out to a list which you yourself do
not own, then you must not give the link to the website in
your ad. If you do this, you will perhaps receive a visitor
who may not respond positively and leave the site. You will
have no way of following up on that visitor as you will not
have their email address.

You must insert a respond address, this can be an
autoresponder, that will send the link to the inquirer for
them to visit your website. Even if they leave the website
without a response, you will have their email address and
you will be able to send follow-up emails to them.

Remember that statistics have shown that it takes an average
of seven follow-ups to achieve a sale. So what chance do
you have if you have not gained the email address of your
visitor.

You can also use the follow-ups to ask them if they would
like to subscribe to your newsletter if you have one.

(Mike Gill is virtually retired and is building a retirement
income on the net from scratch. With no knowledge of the
internet some two years ago, many months of research were
spent in finding out what to do. He has a website at
http://buildretirementincome.com which is devoted to helping
others in a similar situation. His newsletter and special
reports are targetted at this group of internet users.)

Passion Or Weakness?
By Kathy Stone

O.K., I did it. I messed around on the internet too much
at work and lost my job over it. In my exit interview,
when they told me they would have to terminate me - I feebly
replied 'It's a weakness.' Oh, how I could have kicked
myself driving home. When will I learn to keep my mouth
shut?

You'd think I would be worried about coming home and telling
my husband and daughter about losing my job - instead, all I
could think was, it's not a weakness - it's my PASSION.

I had been with this company for almost 15 years, but I just
never seemed to fit in, nodding in appreciation for my 1 to2
percent raises. I was making good money, but there was a
price to pay for that I guess I just chose not to deliver
on. When 5:00 hit, I was going HOME, I had a job to do
there.

I kept a saying underneath my adding machine that read:
'The biggest is take people make in life is not trying to
make a living at doing what they most enjoy.' (by Malcombe
S. Forbes)

I tried to work on my internet business in the evenings and
on weekends, but I'm not as disciplined as you guys, the
evenings are nothing but dinner, some laundry, housework,
homework, etc…And the weekends, forget it, too much catching
up to do, and then before you know it, it's Monday. Back
to the 'rat race'.

I think this is the best thing that has happened to me, it
gives you time to think - re-evaluate your life - it's not
as bad as you think. Don't risk your job like I did,
though. I think I was burnt out and not thinking straight.

Why did I feel that way? Well, my daughter is 11 years old.
I've paid someone else to raise her for 11 years. She's
coming up to some changes in her life that I want to be
there for.

It seems that today's society demands that we do whatever
necessary to bring in the almighty buck, not for groceries,
house payment, electric, etc…but to buy bigger and better
'things'.

So, we'll see how this plays out. I think when today's
society realizes what is really important, they'll realize
that the newest car or flat screen T.V. is not what is
really important. I think the investment of time in the
upbringing of our children and getting back to basics is
what's really important. And what better investment can
there be than that?

I'm going to try to put everything behind me and focus on my
internet business. I've learned the hard way that I just
can't do everything. Of course, winning the lottery sure
would help. But maybe this venture will turn out to be the
lottery for me!

will appear.'

This student is ready!

~~~Helpful Hints~~~
I don't know how many of you have to share your computer
with someone else in the house. When we first got a
computer, my husband and I shared it. That did not last
very long. First of all, we do not use a computer for any
of the same reasons and it caused nothing but havoc.
If you are having problems keeping 'unauthorized' people
from accessing your computer, here are a couple of easy to
implement tricks to keep your computer safe from their
prying fingers.
~~~Readers' Comments/Suggestions~~~

Here are more comments from you:

Hi Lois,

THANK YOU for the great write up about my article! I
really appreciate it. Everytime I write another article,
I feel like it'll never be a good as the ones before it.
So far, the one I feel is my best is 'Don't Overlook This
Valuable Resource!' I REALLY meant every word of that
article. You folks really helped me, and are still helping
me, when I needed it. I only hope that I can help others
as well when the time comes.

Have a sunshiney day!

Peg,

I know you'll 'be there' for whoever needs it at the time.
You strike me as a very caring person and that is how we
grow -- especially in this business.

Dear sir,

Can we track our ads by using free autoresponder ?
thanks and regards,
Krisman

Yes you can. There are a number of ways this can be done.
You can either provide an Ad Code or Number for each ad
run. You could also have a different name for each Ad
Campaign and set up separate autoresponders for each one.
Since you specifically ask about a free one, you might have
some restrictions with either method. You can even set up
a campaign using the 'mailto:' link as discussed above and
use your Subject line as a way of setting up your code. I
hope that helps.

Lois
