KIT # 152: Targeted Traffic - How Will You Achieve It?
Issue:   #152    Date: October 5th, 2004

Publisher's Corner

Lois M. Jeary, www.home4success.com

Thursday, which was still September by the way, brought the terrifying news that we were supposed to receive between 10 and 20 cm of snow. I was not looking forward to that. Besides, we had just had five cords of firewood delivered earlier in the week and most of it was still sitting outside. Thankfully, the snow missed us here and all we had were heavy winds and some rain. Whew!

I recently upgraded to SP2 and can't say I'm all that happy with the results. My computer has slowed down drastically and as they warned, many of my programs are not operating the way they used to. In fact, programs I have running in my system tray will disappear completely. I can't say I'm too crazy about this behavior but from everything I've read, you are better off installing the service pack than not. Here's a question and answer session provided by Marc Liron for people who have or are thinking about installing the SP2 on their computers. You might find this helpful.

Personally, I find it dispicable that Microsoft is going to leave anyone without XP high and dry as far as security goes. It's their own software that has all these gaping security holes and almost 50% of computer owners own an operating system prior to XP. Anyone using an operating system prior to XP will be expected to pay to upgrade IE.

If you'd like more information about this travesty, Jim Gray wrote Older Operating Systems will soon lack security. I also wrote MS - Service Pack 2 for XP.

Today's Feature Article, Targeted Traffic - How Will You Achieve It? by Matthew Zavadil and David Huizar shows you how to work with pay-per-click advertising with the search engines.

Our Special Feature today deals with motivation. In How to Give Yourself a Motivational Warm Up When You Wake Up! Peter Murphy explains that the best time for this motivational moment is first thing in the morning - just as you are waking up.

Have a great day and keep smiling.

Targeted Traffic - How Will You Achieve It?
by Matthew Zavadil & David Huizar

Wouldn't it be great if your website was listed on the first page when your potential customers look for what you sell?

What if you had the very top position when they typed "your product category" into MSN, Yahoo or Google?

If you've had your website up for even one week, you've realized that getting to the top of the search engines is no easy task. The competition is fierce, isn't it? And you have to constantly keep up with the search engine rules and regulations to keep your listing.

Don't get us wrong. Search Engine Optimization is a key to our strategy and should be for you, too.

(We've seen some internet "gurus" out there that teach that you don't need to submit to the search engines anymore because of "pay-per-click" engines. We couldn't disagree more & recommend you stay away from such advice!)

But getting to the top of the free listings can take months. What do you do if you need to start making money now?

USE "PAY-PER-CLICK" ADVERTISING!

We feel there has never been a greater way for the "little guy" to compete with the "big guys". It doesn't matter what industry or niche you are in. Or what product or service you are offering.

Yes, you do have to put out a little cash. But for as little as $.05 to $.10, you can do what every website owner is desperately trying to figure out.

Have you ever heard the saying, "Build it & they will come?" In the brick and mortar world, this may work. But if that is your internet marketing strategy - You need to adjust what you're doing now!

As a website owner, you need to find ways to have your customers find you. You must learn to drive traffic to your site.

Not just any traffic, TARGETED TRAFFIC. If you sell cars, you don't want someone looking for flowers to visit your site. You want the person looking to buy a car now, right?

OK, how does this Pay-Per-Click thing work?

You bid on a specific "keyword" or keyword phrase that a customer would type into a search engine to find your product or service. As mentioned earlier, you could bid as low as $.05 or $.10 at places like Overture or Google. So if someone likes the ad you have listed, clicks your ad and is linked to your site, you only pay your $.10 or $.25 or $.50 - whatever you bid, you only pay if they actually click YOUR ad and go to YOUR website!

You have control of that ad. So you make it loaded with info that would cause only someone interested in what you have to offer to actually click. You must get inside your prospect's head and figure out "What does this person really want?"

- (Ad copy is an art in and of itself - We'll need to postpone discussing that subject for a later time)

Once that person arrives at your site, it's up to you to make sure your site really "sings" and compels your prospect to sign up for your mailing list, buy or whatever it is you want them to do.

But do you see the beauty of all this? You find out what keywords your prospects are looking up, you bid on those keywords and Bam! - YOUR AD APPEARS AT THE TOP OF MSN, YAHOO, GOOGLE, etc.

These are qualified prospects! People interested in buying only what you have to offer. Never before in history has it been possible for a business owner to start a business, place an ad and get QUALIFIED buyers so quickly; at such a minimal cost to the owner!

Imagine it costing you $.25 or $.50 to attract a prospect to your site. Let's say you offer a product selling for $75. How often would you like to give us $.25 every time we gave you $75? Can you see how quickly you can have a thriving internet business up & running?

We recommend starting at pay-per-click engines like Overture.com, Findwhat.com and Google adwords. It would be wise to go there and review their guidelines and how they operate.

If you invest the time necessary to master this subject and add it as another "spoke" to your advertising "wheel", you will see not only a huge surge in your website traffic, but your profits as well.

And, ultimately, that's what you're really after, isn't it?

Everyday Wisdom
by Dr. Wayne Dwyer

Deficiency-motivated people spend their lives in the disease called more - always trying to acquire something to make themselves feel complete and to repair the deficiency.

Conflict is a violation of harmony. If you participate in it you are part of the problem, not the solution.

Inspiration

Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.
- Thomas Edison

The fact that you are willing to say, "I do not understand, and it is fine," is the greatest understanding you could exhibit.
- Wayne Dyer, Author and Speaker

There are four ways, and only four ways, in which we have contact with the world. We are evaluated and classified by these four contacts: what we do, how we look, what we say, and how we say it.

Special Feature

How to Give Yourself a Motivational Warm Up
When You Wake Up!

by Peter Murphy

What is the worst thing you can do when you start your day?

Wake up feeling exhausted and expect yourself to perform at 100% from the moment you get up in the morning; and then compare how you are doing during the day against this unrealistic benchmark.

There is a better way!

As you wake up in the morning take charge of your thoughts in that early morning awareness before you fully awake.

Do this before you get up out of bed by repeating some affirmations. Affirmations work very well WHEN you say them with strong feelings in a state of deep relaxation.

If you have heard about affirmations before and never got the maximum benefit from them it is because you did not know how to take a very simple approach and supercharge it.

Supercharging affirmations depends on four factors:

  • Phrasing affirmations in the right way
  • Choosing ones that are right for you
  • Saying them while in a state of deep relaxation
  • Speaking them with strong feeling

When you use affirmations correctly their impact will last for at least a few hours - long enough to get you started on the day ahead.

Pay close attention now because I am going to reveal details of some of my personal and very private habits...

I use the following affirmations to help me get up in a positive state of mind:

- Positive thoughts bring me the benefits I desire

- Negative thoughts have no influence over me

- Everyday and in everyway I am getting better and better

To start the day with confidence...

- I am confident and charming with the people I meet

- I radiate confidence and relaxation

- I start great conversations easily and effortlessly

- I approve of myself and feel great about myself

- I have sky-high self-esteem

You can do the same...

Remember to say these affirmations with feeling and do so quietly inside your head while in that relaxed awakening state.

Unless I use this ritual each morning I tend to feel negative about the day ahead. The difference from feeling negative to feeling positive is huge for the sake of those few minutes in the morning.

You can also go one step further and imagine the day ahead working out well. See yourself doing your best and easily dealing with challenges. Imagine yourself feeling confident and behaving in that way no matter who you deal with.

Imagine you will have a great day in this way and you are directing your unconscious to make it happen in the language it understands best - feelings and images. Forget about will power.

Will power is a waste of time because its like talking to the most powerful part of your mind in a language it does not understand.

The key to success is to discover breakthrough ways of using your mind and to use these strategies daily.

Hot Tip

Tutorial ... "Copy It - or Move It?

Here's a tip which solved a long term irritation for me until I learned about it. Like many things to do with computers, it's easy once you know how.

I move files and folders about by dragging them across in 'Explorer' (right click 'Start', click 'Explorer).

But Windows treats your dragged files differently if you're moving them around the same disk, or if you're moving them between disks.

Drag a file from one folder to another, and the file is moved. But drag the same file to another disk that's separate from your hard disk, like a floppy or a Zip disk, and it's copied.

NOT moved.

Dumbness prevails - hey wake up at the back!

If you want to get control of the situation, and always be presented with a verification of your intent, use the RIGHT drag method. Really. Just right click instead of left clicking when you drag an icon. When you release the right button, you'll see a context menu appear with these options:

Move Here, Copy Here, Create Shortcut(s) Here, and Cancel.

It sure beats not knowing what Windows will do next.

If you don't like pressing the right mouse button for some reason, hold down the Ctrl and Shift keys at the same time while dragging with the left mouse button. You can press them before or after you click the mouse--it doesn't care. The end result is the same. You be presented with a context menu seeking your intent.

Windows does try and aid you to some degree, changing the mouse cursor depending on the action taken. For example, a small plus sign (+) appears when you copy, and a small curved arrow appears when you're creating a shortcut.
